The Liberian History

  Liberia's first inhabitants were ancestors of the  Gola  and  Kissi  peoples  from north-central Africa who arrived as early as the 12th century. They were joined by the  Kruan people  (Kru, Kuwaa, Bassa, Krahn and Dei ethnic groups), moving in from the north and east.

  Liberia was founded in January 7,1822  as an outpost for returning freed slaves from the Americas . It grew into a colony and eventually became a commonwealth, and achieved independence in 1847 with the help of the American Colonization Society (a private organization based in the United States).
